Nurse–patient interaction in basic care situations

These dialogues show how nurses, patients and students communicate in basic care situations in a care home.
A doctor in a white coat holds a clipboard. Two people conversing, one in blue scrubs and the other in a blue shirt. Wheelchair nearby.

There are eight situations in all. Each dialogue comes with a word list (Finnish–English) and some photos of care items. The dialogues run in chronological order. The vocabulary builds up from one dialogue to the next, so it’s best to read the dialogues in order. In the word list we usually give first the form in which the word appears in the text, followed by the base form of the word or verb. Some words are very context-specific.

The dialogues reflect an authentic way of talking with a patient. However, they have been simplified for clarity. Some colloquial phrases are explained in the word list.

A nursing teacher has checked the dialogues, which were originally published on Edupoli’s website in 2007 in a publicly funded project under the name Lähihoitajan kielitukimateriaali. The material has now been revised and is being republished in the Kielibuusti portal.
